United Nigeria Airlines has sealed an agreement with Southwest Airlines for the delivery of six Boeing 737-800 aircraft, marking a significant milestone in the airline’s strategic plan and growth.
The acquisition will enable the airline to broaden its domestic, regional, and international operations, enhance efficiency and capacity, and strengthen Nigeria’s competitive edge in global aviation.
The Boeing 737-800 aircraft is renowned for its advanced technology, fuel efficiency, and passenger comfort, accommodating up to 189 passengers in a single-class configuration. The airline plans to utilise the aircraft to serve both short-haul and medium-haul routes effectively, optimising its networks and providing efficient point-to-point travels.
United Nigeria Airlines’ Executive Chairman, Professor Obiora Okonkwo, expressed excitement about the acquisition, citing the airline’s plans to operate new flights, lift more passengers and cargo at competitive fares, and generate thousands of direct and indirect jobs. The airline has also expressed interest in acquiring an additional four Boeing 737-800 NG aircraft, bringing the total to ten.

The acquisition was brokered in partnership with SkyWorks Holdings, LLC, and Boeing has pledged continued support to ensure a smooth entry into service and operation of the fleet.
Southwest Airlines’ excellent maintenance culture was also a motivating factor for the acquisition, and United Nigeria Airlines looks forward to continued collaboration with the airline in areas such as training and maintenance support.
