
The Vice Chairman of the International Transport Workers Federation (ITF) and Deputy President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Dr. Adewale Adeyanju, has joined the global maritime community in celebrating the International Maritime Day, observed annually on September 25.
This year’s theme, “Our Ocean, Our Obligation, Our Opportunity”, highlights the ocean’s significance in providing humanity with food, trade, jobs, biodiversity, and climate regulation.
Adeyanju emphasised the importance of protecting the ocean and adhering to the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) code to ensure a safer and more sustainable maritime environment. He noted that Nigeria must cooperate with world leaders to form policies that reduce hazardous emissions and protect the nation’s blue economy.
The NLC Deputy President commended the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Hon. Adegboyega Oyetola, for his vision and achievements in promoting the blue economy and creating wealth and employment opportunities. He urged Nigerians to take up professionalism in the marine and blue economy sector, which is a vital part of local and international trade.
Adeyanju concluded by felicitating with maritime workers in Nigeria and across the world, believing that together, they can protect the ocean for the benefit of all.
He emphasised the need for collective action to keep the ocean fresh and lively for every living creature underneath it.
