In a major breakthrough against drug smuggling, the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have seized a 1x40ft container carrying over ₦4.7 billion worth of Cannabis Indica at Tincan Island Port Command.

The seizure was announced during a press briefing held at the Enforcement Unit of Tincan Island Port Command on Wednesday, 4 February 2026, by the Commander of the Strategic Command. The operation aligns with the theme of this year’s World Customs Organisation (WCO) 2026 International Customs Day, “Customs Protecting Society through Vigilance and Commitment”.

The container, bearing the number HLXU841299/0, was intercepted on January 28, 2026 after an extensive physical examination by Customs officers in collaboration with NDLEA and the Department of State Services (DSS). Inside, officers discovered fifty-five jumbo bags of Cannabis Indica, comprising 2,366 packages with a combined weight of 1,183 kilograms, as well as one Colt MK IV/Series 70 .45 automatic pistol with an empty magazine.

According to the Customs Area Controller (CAC) of the Tincan Island Port Command, Compt. Frank Onyeka, the estimated street value of the seized narcotics is ₦4,732,000,000, and one suspect has been arrested in connection with the seizure. Investigators also revealed that the drugs and firearm were concealed in three used vehicles: a Hyundai Santa Fe, a Toyota Sienna, and a Toyota Matrix.

The narcotics have been handed over to the NDLEA for further investigation and prosecution, while the firearm will be transferred to the relevant authorities.

The CAC at the briefing, emphasised the agency’s zero-tolerance stance on drug smuggling and transnational crime. “The Nigeria Customs Service remains resolute in its commitment to safeguarding national security and public health”, he said.

He also commended the leadership of Comptroller General of Customs Adewale Adeniyi, for his strategic guidance in strengthening inter-agency collaboration and operational efficiency.

The Command assured the public of its continued vigilance in combating smuggling and other illegal activities at all ports of entry.
