The Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project (L-PRES) has strengthened efforts to promote climate-smart livestock farming in Nigeria through a strategic collaboration with the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), aimed at improving weather monitoring and supporting informed decision-making among livestock farmers.

L-PRES, a national programme designed to boost livestock productivity while building resilience against climate-related challenges, is partnering with NiMet to provide farmers with critical weather data and resources needed to adapt to increasingly unpredictable climate patterns.

During a courtesy visit to NiMet’s headquarters, the National Coordinator of L-PRES, Sanusi Abubakar, met with the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of NiMet, Charles Anosike. The visit featured the formal handover of four Automatic Weather Observation Systems (AWOS) to the agency.

Abubakar congratulated Anosike on the public release of NiMet’s 2026 Seasonal Climate Prediction, noting that the agency plays a crucial role in supporting Nigeria’s agricultural sector with timely and reliable weather information. He stressed that the collaboration is key to achieving L-PRES’ goal of building stronger resilience across the nation’s livestock value chain.

In his remarks, Anosike commended L-PRES for procuring and donating the AWOS units, describing the gesture as a significant boost to Nigeria’s meteorological observation infrastructure. According to him, the new weather stations will be installed in rehabilitated grazing reserves across the country, providing accurate and localized climate data that will help livestock farmers plan better and improve productivity.

Both organisations reaffirmed their commitment to sustained collaboration, emphasizing that the integration of modern technology and meteorological expertise will help protect Nigeria’s livestock industry from climate risks while improving farmers’ livelihoods and advancing sustainable agricultural development.
