Ethiopian Airlines has confirmed the conversion of options for six Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft into firm orders, deepening its long-haul growth strategy and fleet modernisation drive.

The deal with Boeing stems from the airline’s landmark 2023 order and will see the addition of six 787-9 jets to its expanding fleet. The aircraft are expected to boost intercontinental operations from Addis Ababa while enhancing cargo capacity amid rising global demand for long-haul travel.

Group Chief Executive Officer, Mesfin Tasew, described the move as a significant milestone, noting that the firm order reflects the airline’s sustained growth trajectory and readiness for future opportunities. He added that investing in advanced aircraft like the 787-9 supports operational efficiency and improves passenger comfort.

Already the continent’s largest operator of the Dreamliner, Ethiopian Airlines deploys its 787-8 and 787-9 aircraft across key routes linking Africa to Europe, Asia, and North America, alongside major intra-African destinations.

On its part, Boeing reaffirmed the strategic importance of the partnership, with its Africa Commercial Sales and Marketing Vice President, Anbessie Yitbarek, stating that the Dreamliner continues to serve as the backbone of the airline’s fleet as it expands routes and enhances service delivery.

The 787 Dreamliner is widely recognised for its fuel efficiency and versatility, enabling airlines to operate long-distance routes more economically while supporting cargo transport through its belly capacity; an advantage Ethiopian Airlines is leveraging to strengthen its position in high-demand global trade corridors.
