The Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) has entered into a strategic partnership with the Apollo Africa Leadership Foundation (AALF) to develop young leaders and strengthen community engagement in support of Lagos State’s growing blue economy.
The collaboration, formalised during a meeting at LASWA headquarters in Lagos, is aimed at promoting leadership development, youth empowerment, environmental sustainability and community-driven initiatives to build the human capital required for the state’s expanding waterways and maritime sector.
Building Leadership Through Collaboration
Speaking during the meeting, the General Manager of LASWA and Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on the Blue Economy, Mr. Oluwadamilola Emmanuel, said strategic partnerships are essential to driving innovation, sustainable development and greater youth participation across key sectors of the economy.
“The growth of the blue economy requires visionary leadership, community participation and strategic partnerships. We are pleased to collaborate with the Apollo Africa Leadership Foundation in promoting leadership excellence, capacity development and initiatives that will positively impact waterfront communities and stakeholders within the waterways sector”, he said.
Focus on Youth Development
Under the partnership, both organisations will implement leadership development programmes, youth empowerment initiatives, community outreach projects, environmental sustainability campaigns and knowledge-sharing engagements.
The programmes are designed to equip young Nigerians with the leadership skills and practical knowledge needed to contribute meaningfully to the growth and sustainability of Lagos State’s blue economy.
Empowering Future African Leaders
Director of the Apollo Africa Leadership Foundation, Ayo Akindele, described the partnership as an opportunity to nurture a new generation of transformational leaders across Africa.
“Leadership is one of Africa’s most valuable resources, and building future leaders requires collaboration across both the public and private sectors.
“Our partnership with LASWA presents an opportunity to empower young people with the skills, exposure and mindset needed to drive sustainable development and contribute meaningfully to the growth of the state, country and continent”, he said.
Supporting Lagos’ Blue Economy Vision
The partnership aligns with the Lagos State Government’s vision of using the blue economy as a catalyst for economic growth, job creation, environmental sustainability and improved quality of life for residents.
Both organisations reaffirmed their commitment to implementing impactful programmes that will strengthen leadership capacity, promote waterway safety, encourage environmental stewardship and create lasting benefits for waterfront communities across Lagos.
