The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has received the AfriGEO Weather, Climate and Early Warning Services Award in recognition of its outstanding contributions to weather and climate services, early warning systems and climate resilience through Earth observation.

The award was presented to the Director-General/Chief Executive Officer, Prof. Charles Anosike, by the Director-General of the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA), Prof. Matthew Olumide Adepoju, at the 10th AfriGEO Gala Dinner held in Abuja on October 7, 2026.

The ceremony was part of activities marking the 10th AfriGEO Symposium, a leading African platform dedicated to advancing the application of Earth observation, geospatial information and environmental intelligence in promoting sustainable development and resilience across the continent.

The 2026 symposium, themed “Earth Observations for a Resilient Africa,” brought together policymakers, scientists, development partners, private-sector stakeholders and practitioners from AfriGEO’s 33 African member states to explore ways of harnessing Earth observation technologies for sustainable development and improved resilience.

NiMet reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening the application of weather, climate and Earth observation information to improve early warning systems, support evidence-based decision-making and enhance climate resilience across Nigeria.

The Agency said it would sustain its investments in innovation, strategic partnerships and the provision of timely, actionable climate information to support the Federal Government’s climate-resilience agenda and contribute to a safer, better-informed and climate-resilient Nigeria.
