The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and the Centre for Energy Research and Training (CERT) at Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen environmental monitoring and research.

The partnership was formalised at a signing ceremony led by NiMet’s Director General, Professor Charles Anosike, and ABU’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Adamu Ahmed.

Anosike highlighted the critical role of science and innovation in improving national outcomes, stating that the collaboration will support joint research in climate science, radiological monitoring, and climate-smart agricultural practices. He emphasised that meteorological data is crucial for environmental safety, agricultural productivity, and early warning systems.

The NiMet Director General also mentioned collaborative efforts in soil mapping, Seasonal Climate Prediction (SCP), and capacity building across key sectors.

Ahmed lauded NiMet’s contributions to agricultural development through accurate and timely weather and climate information. He expressed optimism about joint activities in radioactive materials mapping, technical training, and developing tools to enhance environmental monitoring, food security, and public safety.

This partnership aims to leverage science to improve livelihoods and build national resilience, with a focus on environmental monitoring, food security, and public safety.
