The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has launched a groundbreaking centralised Secure Aviation Data Information Service (SADIS) API platform, solidifying Nigeria’s position as a pioneer in modern aviation weather technology in Africa.
This cutting-edge upgrade enhances flight safety, boosts operational efficiency, and future-proofs the country’s aviation meteorological services in line with international standards.
The SADIS API, operated by the UK Met Office under the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), provides real-time access to critical meteorological information, replacing the legacy SADIS FTP system. Nigerian aviation stakeholders now have secure, instant access to essential forecasts, charts, and observations, supporting safe, reliable, and cost-effective flight operations nationwide.
NiMet’s Director General/CEO, Professor Charles Anosike, commended the ICT team and participants for their dedication, stating, “this innovation demonstrates NiMet’s leadership in embracing modern technologies that strengthen aviation safety and efficiency while ensuring compliance with ICAO and WMO standards”.
The SADIS platform provides key aviation datasets, including WAFS Gridded Data and Operational Meteorological (OPMET) Data. With this milestone, Nigeria becomes a pioneer in Africa for integrating modern SADIS technologies into national aviation operations, enabling pilots, forecasters, and aviation operators to access critical weather data faster and more reliably.
This development ensures safer, more cost-effective, and more competitive flight operations nationwide, marking a significant step forward for Nigeria’s aviation industry.
