The Director General and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), Professor Charles Anosike, has been honoured as one of Nigeria’s Top 100 Environmental and Sustainability Professionals by Environment Africa Magazine.

In a ceremony attended by leading environmental stakeholders, Anosike was represented by Mrs. Glory Onyegbule, Director of Applied Meteorological Services.

Anosike’s recognition stems from his visionary leadership in advancing climate resilience and sustainability in Nigeria. His work has been pivotal in aligning meteorological services with the needs of vulnerable communities and critical economic sectors, ensuring weather and climate information becomes a key driver of development and disaster preparedness.

Under his guidance, NiMet has undergone a major transformation — significantly upgrading early warning systems to deliver timely, impact-based forecasts. These forecasts are now more accessible and actionable, reaching local governments, farmers, and emergency response teams through digital platforms and mobile technology.

A strong advocate of technological innovation, Anosike has introduced digital climate advisory services and AI-driven forecasting tools tailored for smallholder farmers. By localising climate data, including translations into indigenous languages he has broken longstanding communication barriers, empowering communities on the front lines of climate change.

What distinguishes Anosike is his collaborative, systems-based approach. He has built partnerships with universities, private sector players, and international development agencies to scale weather infrastructure, train future climate scientists, and promote sustainable urban planning.

His leadership has also emphasised the integration of climate risk into business and institutional decision-making, urging proactive measures toward resilience.

In further recognition of his impact, the NiMet Director General received a second honour at the event — the prestigious Top ECO-HERO 2025 Certificate of Recognition, highlighting his role as a leading voice in Nigeria’s environmental and sustainability landscape.

Anosike’s work continues to shape national policy and grassroots action, laying a strong foundation for a more climate-resilient and sustainable Nigeria.
