The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Kirikiri Lighter Terminal (KLT) Area Command, has commissioned a modern block of classrooms at the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Kirikiri, Lagos, reinforcing its commitment to community development under the Customs Cares initiative.

Unveiled during a ceremony held on Wednesday, February 11, 2026, the project features fully furnished classrooms, a borehole, water closet facilities, a well-equipped library, and a functional Information and Communication Technology (ICT) centre.

The intervention underscores the Service’s resolve to extend its impact beyond core statutory duties to meaningful social transformation.

The project was initiated under the leadership of the then Customs Area Controller, now Assistant Comptroller General of Customs, Eghosa Edelduok. Conceived as a strategic investment in education, the initiative aims to leverage learning as a pathway for rehabilitation, personal growth, and successful reintegration of inmates into society.

ACG Edelduok described the facility as more than just a physical structure, calling it a beacon of hope and renewal for inmates. She expressed appreciation to the Comptroller General of Customs for his visionary leadership, and to the Acting Customs Area Controller, officers, partners, and stakeholders whose collective efforts ensured the project’s realisation.

Following her redeployment and promotion, the Acting Customs Area Controller, Deputy Comptroller Bolaji Adigun, sustained the momentum and oversaw the successful completion of the project. In his remarks, he emphasised the facility’s role in providing inmates with access to education, practical skills, and renewed hope, highlighting the importance of continuity, dedication, and teamwork in public service delivery.

The Comptroller General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, reaffirmed that the Nigeria Customs Service will continue to drive impactful social interventions through the Customs Cares framework, focusing on education, healthcare, water provision, and literacy in alignment with sustainable development priorities.

He commended ACG Edelduok for her foresight in initiating the project and described the new facility as a practical demonstration of the Service’s commitment to building an inclusive society—one that goes beyond trade facilitation and border security to uplift lives and strengthen communities.

Also speaking at the event, the Comptroller General of the Nigeria Correctional Service, Sylvester Nwakuche, represented by Deputy Comptroller General Amos Kupan, lauded the Nigeria Customs Service for supporting the rehabilitation mandate of the Correctional Service. He noted that the facility would significantly improve the learning environment within the custodial centre and enhance educational and vocational training programmes.

Stakeholders at the ceremony applauded the initiative, describing it as a bold step in corporate social responsibility and a meaningful contribution to nation-building and human capital development.

The Comptroller General of Customs formally commissioned the facility and conducted a tour of the project site, reiterating the Service’s unwavering commitment to promoting social development and sustainable national growth.
