The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has commissioned the Wale Adeniyi Sports Arena (WASA) at the Western Marine Command, underscoring its commitment to community development, youth empowerment and the physical and mental wellbeing of officers.

The facility was unveiled by the Comptroller General of Customs (CGC), Adewale Adeniyi, at a ceremony attended by senior Customs officers, sister security agencies, community leaders, youth representatives and the media.

Speaking at the event, the Controller of the Western Marine Command, Comptroller PN Ntadi, described the arena as a key Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative designed to promote peace, discipline and constructive engagement among youths and officers alike.

“This is not just about unveiling a sports facility; it is about purpose, people and preserving a legacy of service”, Ntadi said.

He noted that the arena was named after Wale Adeniyi, former National Public Relations Officer of the NCS, in recognition of his diligence, professionalism and grassroots approach to public service.

“Wale Adeniyi exemplified integrity, hard work and loyalty. Naming this facility after him is our way of ensuring that exemplary service is never forgotten and that positive role models continue to inspire the next generation”, the Controller stated.

Ntadi explained that WASA reflects the Service’s belief that security goes beyond patrols and enforcement to include prevention and social investment.

“When we provide safe spaces for recreation, mentorship and healthy competition, we are investing in peace, stability and the future of our communities”, he said, adding that the arena would help take youths off the streets and channel their energy into productive ventures.

He urged community leaders, parents and youth groups to take ownership of the facility and ensure its protection and proper utilisation, stressing that effective security requires strong community partnership.

In his remarks, Adeniyi said the arena would serve both Customs officers and host communities, noting that the demanding nature of Customs work makes physical and mental fitness essential.

“Our jobs are demanding and it is necessary that we maintain the right balance. Officers must remain physically and mentally fit, and one of the ways to achieve that is through facilities like this”, the CGC said.

He encouraged officers not only within Western Marine Command but also from neighbouring commands such as KLT, Tin Can, PTML and Apapa to make use of the arena.

The CGC also commended the improving relationship between Customs and the host communities, saying stronger rapport had made it easier to implement people-centred projects.

“I’m happy that there is now better understanding between us and the community. That is why we can carry out projects like this that benefit everyone”, he noted.

He added that similar facilities were being provided across commands nationwide to promote health, unity and positive engagement.

The commissioning of the Wale Adeniyi Sports Arena, according to Customs authori⅓ties, is expected to serve as a hub for recreation, mentorship and talent development, while strengthening ties between the Service and its host communities.

Officials said the project reflects the Nigeria Customs Service’s growing focus on combining enforcement with human development and sustainable peace-building initiatives.
