The Chairperson of the Women in Maritime and Energy Awards (WIME) Board of Trustees, Dr. Mrs. Chizoba Anyika, has called for the diversification of Nigeria’s blue economy beyond oil and shipping.

Speaking at the 2025 World Maritime Day celebration, she emphasised the vast potential of the country’s 850 km coastline for tourism, recreation, and ecotourism.

“Ecotourism is critical not only for sustainability but also for boosting Nigeria’s GDP and empowering coastal communities”, Anyika said, highlighting the importance of sustainable planning and development.

She stressed that building blue infrastructure, such as eco-friendly resorts, marinas, and cruise terminals, must integrate climate resilience, environmental safeguards, and community participation to succeed long-term.

Anyika also emphasised the need to preserve environmental and cultural assets, stating, “Tourism that ignores our environment or erodes our culture is not sustainable”. She noted that mangrove forests, coastal wetlands, and traditional maritime festivals are vital assets that must be protected.

In conclusion, the marine expert called for collaboration between policymakers, investors, and local communities. “The blue economy must go beyond shipping and oil. It must embrace tourism, recreation, and ecotourism as key pathways to prosperity”.

This call to action underscores the potential for Nigeria’s blue economy to drive sustainable development and prosperity through tourism and ecotourism.
