The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, on Thursday received the Governor of Edo State, His Excellency, Senator Monday Okpebholo, in audience as both leaders advanced discussions on the immediate activation of an indigenous airline for Edo State.

Governor Okpebholo, who paid the Minister a strategic courtesy visit alongside key members of his cabinet, said the initiative is aimed at positioning aviation as a catalyst for Edo State’s economic revival, investment inflow, and job creation, with operations to be anchored at the Benin Airport.

He stressed the urgency of establishing a homegrown carrier to boost connectivity and unlock commercial opportunities across the state and the wider region.

According to him, the Edo State Government is already exploring partnership options, including engagements with South African investors who have indicated readiness to provide aircraft for the take-off of operations.

“If I have my way, I want this airline to kick off immediately — like tomorrow, even before the election. Edo State needs a strong aviation presence to open up our economy and reposition Benin as a major hub,” Governor Okpebholo stated.

In his response, Minister Keyamo welcomed the proposal, describing it as timely, strategic and visionary. He disclosed that the Ministry has also been engaging potential investors who have shown increasing interest in the commercial viability of Benin Airport.

The Minister recalled the historical importance of the airport in Nigeria’s aviation ecosystem, noting its role during the peak years of the defunct Okada Air.

“Benin Airport used to be a strong aviation hub during the glory days of Okada Air. There is no reason it cannot reclaim that status. The interest we are seeing today confirms that Benin is ready again,” Keyamo said.

To fast-track implementation, the Minister approved the establishment of a technical committee and requested the Governor to nominate a focal person who will work directly with the Ministry’s Director of Air Transport Management on coordination, regulatory compliance, and operational planning.

“This committee will report to both of us on a weekly basis for effective coordination. With proper collaboration, Benin Airport should be fully operational between the first and second quarters of this year,” the Minister assured.

The engagement underscores the federal glovernment’s commitment to strengthening regional air connectivity, promoting indigenous airline operations, and supporting state-driven aviation development in line with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
