Ethiopian Airlines has signed lease agreements with AerCap Holdings N.V. for two Boeing 777-300ERSF converted freighters, marking a major milestone in the continent’s air cargo evolution.
The aircraft, popularly known as “The Big Twin” will be the first of their kind to operate in Africa, with delivery scheduled for the second quarter of 2028. The acquisition is expected to significantly expand the airline’s cargo capacity and operational efficiency as demand for air freight continues to surge globally.
Group CEO of the airline, Mesfin Tasew, described the agreement as a strategic leap forward, noting that the introduction of the 777-300ERSF will strengthen the airline’s cargo network and support regional and international trade.
He emphasised that the airline remains focused on investing in advanced, sustainable aviation solutions to reinforce its leadership in the global cargo market.
Also speaking, Aengus Kelly, highlighted the significance of the deal, describing Ethiopian Airlines as the first operator of the aircraft type in Africa. He noted that the freighter offers about 25 per cent more capacity than smaller twin-engine long-haul cargo aircraft, delivering improved cost efficiency and positioning the airline for further expansion.
The agreement further deepens the long-standing partnership between both companies, with AerCap reaffirming its support for Ethiopian Airlines’ continued growth and operational excellence in the global aviation space.
