The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has clarified details of its proposed firefighters’ training programme following a media report by The Guardian Nigeria on March 11, 2026, which highlighted concerns raised by the Nigerian Aviation Fire and Safety Association (NAFSA).

In a statement, signed by its Director, Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Henry Agbebire, FAAN explained that the training programme is not an online-only initiative as suggested in the report, but a hybrid training model that combines virtual learning, classroom sessions, and hands-on field exercises over a structured six-week period.

According to the Authority, the blended approach aligns with modern global training practices and is intended to enhance the competence of Airport Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF) personnel, rather than diminish it. While theoretical aspects of the course may be delivered through virtual platforms to improve efficiency and widen participation, practical drills, live simulations, and field exercises remain central components of the programme.

FAAN further stressed that the training framework complies fully with the provisions of International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) Annex 14 and the relevant advisory circulars issued by the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), both of which mandate practical drills, exercises, and simulation-based training.

The Authority noted that adopting the hybrid model will enable it to train a larger number of firefighters more efficiently, while ensuring that airport operations across the country remain fully staffed and safe during the training period.

FAAN reaffirmed that the programme will not compromise operational readiness, safety standards, or the effectiveness of Airport Rescue and Firefighting services.
