
In commemoration of the 2025 ‘Girls in Aviation Day, the Women in Aviation International (WAI) Nigeria Chapter on September 18, 2025 hosted over 30 students from Murtala Muhammed Airport (MMA) Schools in Lagos.
The event aimed to introduce young girls to the vast opportunities in aviation and aerospace, with a focus on Artificial Intelligence (AI).
Akpan Ifreke Effiong, a tech guru from the Training and Human Resources Department of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), delivered a presentation titled “Smart Skills For Smart Future; Role of AI.” He emphasised the importance of embracing AI to stay relevant in today’s generation. “The future is digital and it is AI laden. Stay curious and continue to learn so that you will be relevant in this generation”, he advised.
He encouraged the students to join Tech Clubs or Booth Camps, online courses, and engage in projects that solve real-life problems to sharpen their knowledge in AI.
During his presentation, Effiong explained that AI relies on computer systems and human intelligence to function. He took the students through various aspects of AI, including data awareness, tech adaptability, cybersecurity awareness, and cloud computing. The students also learned about the impact of AI on flight operations and safety, including its ability to analyse sensors for potential failures, reducing downtime and accidents.

Ambassador Ijeoma Chukwu, representing the President of WAI Nigeria, Dr. Rejoice Ndudinachi, urged the young girls to aspire and build careers in aviation, highlighting the industry’s need for passionate individuals in various roles. “We are celebrating future pilots, cabin crew, Air Traffic Controllers, Ground Handlers, Aircraft Engineers, Air Ticketing desk officers, etc. Whatever you want in aviation is possible starting from today”, she said.
Secretary of the Lagos Branch of WAI, Sholademi Olaide, explained the significance of Girls in Aviation International Day, which is observed globally on September 20th to inspire and educate young people about aviation and aerospace careers. She highlighted the various activities that participants engage in, such as flight simulations, flight tours, and artistic designs related to aviation.
Protocol Officer of the Lagos Branch of WAI, Ms. Sylvia Egbegi, took the students through the evolution of aviation, from ancient concepts of flight to the modern-day jet engine revolution. Meanwhile, Ms. Adesua Jibunoh of Encima Travels and Tours Limited shared insights on building a career in the travel agency business, emphasising the importance of internships and practical experience.
The event featured a Question-and-Answer session, where students showed keen interest in pursuing careers in aviation.
The occasion was attended by notable guests, including the principal of MMA Schools, Mrs. Stella Otoide, and representatives from the Aviation Club of MMA Schools.
