In a determined effort to foster water safety skills among schoolchildren, the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) has launched the 5th edition of its Lagos Water Savvy Kids Programmes, targeting 50 students from five public schools in the riverine communities of Badagry.
The programme, which kicked off on Monday, October 20, 2025, is a week-long training initiative that blends theory with practical lessons in swimming, water safety, and survival techniques. It is being delivered in partnership with the Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) and Dolphin Swim School (DSS), an organization known for its work in aquatic education, especially among women and children.
For children living in waterfront communities where boats are a part of daily life, LASWA believes swimming should be a basic life skill, not a luxury. “As water transport becomes more integrated into the city’s transit system, it’s vital that our young residents feel safe and confident navigating these routesh a LASWA representative said.
The selected pupils are learning not just how to swim, but how to stay calm during water emergencies and respond effectively in potentially life-threatening situations. The training also aims to dispel fear of water and instill confidence in young learners who may have previously lacked access to such skills.
The Water Savvy Kids Program is part of LASWA’s broader mission to create a safety-first culture on Lagos waterways. Now in its fifth year, the initiative continues to build a new generation of informed and responsible waterway users.
The current edition will wrap up on Friday, October 24, 2025, with participants expected to showcase their improved skills and awareness.
