The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) has confirmed the successful handling of an air incident involving a passenger aircraft that made an emergency landing at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, on Friday January 17, 2026.

According to a preliminary report issued by the agency, the incident followed distress alerts received via LASEMA’s 767/112 Toll-Free Emergency Lines. This prompted the immediate activation of the State’s Emergency Response Plan from its Command and Control Centre in Alausa, Ikeja.

Upon arrival at the scene, the LASEMA Response Team (LRT) discovered that the passenger aircraft had developed technical faults while airborne within Nigerian airspace, necessitating a forced landing in Lagos.

The aircraft, whose operator’s name was not disclosed, was carrying 248 passengers and 12 crew members at full capacity. The pilot successfully executed a safe emergency landing on the runway at MMIA, with LASEMA and other emergency agencies already positioned on high alert.

LASEMA stated that coordinated efforts among multiple emergency response agencies ensured swift control of the situation. After safety checks by the pilot and engineering crew, the aircraft was moved to the apron for detailed inspection and necessary repairs.

All passengers were safely evacuated from the aircraft, with no injuries or fatalities recorded. The agency further confirmed that despite the technical fault and emergency landing, no significant damage was sustained by the aircraft.

Recovery operations have since been completed, and the aircraft has been secured on the apron. LASEMA confirmed that the rescue operation was successfully concluded.

Agencies involved in the operation included the LASEMA Response Team, Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS), Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, and the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN).

The report was electronically signed by the Permanent Secretary, LASEMA, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu.

It was disclosed to our correspondent under anonymity that the flight was operated by Quartar Airways.

As at the time of filing this report the airline could not be reached for a confirmation.
