L-R: President of Dockworkers, Comrade Agboola Bolaji, PG of MWUN, Abi, Dr. Amos of ILO, & SG of the Union, Com. Oniha Erazua

The President General of the Maritime Workers’ Union of Nigeria (MWUN), Comrade Francis Abi, has expressed profound appreciation to the Director General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Dr. Dayo Mobereola, for his pivotal role in the successful unionisation of Melsmore Ltd and the formal signing of the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) between MWUN and the company.

Abi signed CBA establishes the operational framework for unionised workers at Melsmore Ltd, a shipping company based in Victoria Island and active in Nigeria’s maritime sector.

He described Mobereola as one of NIMASA’s most outstanding Director Generals – thorough, proactive, disciplined, and unwaveringly committed to duty. He noted that Mobereola’s extensive expertise in maritime administration was instrumental in ensuring a seamless and equitable process for both organisations.

It will be recalled that Mobereola provided balanced guidance to both MWUN and the management of Melsmore Ltd, ensuring that the negotiations culminated in mutually beneficial terms for the maritime workers in the company’s employ. Ultimately, Melsmore Ltd embraced the importance of granting its workers a genuine sense of belonging within the maritime industry—an ecosystem regulated in part by MWUN alongside other major agencies, including NIMASA.

Veteran sailor and foremost maritime labour leader, Comrade Bunu, further emphasised that the strengthened relationship among NIMASA, MWUN, and Melsmore Ltd will continue to flourish, having reached this new level of mutual understanding in record time.

He also extended gratitude to the

management of Melsmore Ltd for its willingness to listen and engage constructively. He explained that challenges arise only when companies refuse to acknowledge the welfare needs of their workers as stipulated by labour laws—conditions under which the Union is compelled to intervene.

Having navigated past initial difficulties and arrived at a constructive truce, Bunu commended Mobereola for his “big brother” role in resolving the impasse between Melsmore Ltd and MWUN.

He affirmed that Mobereola has once again demonstrated why he is regarded as the true “Doctor” of the maritime industry.
