The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) leadership, led by the President-General, Comrade Francis Abi, met with the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) management in Warri on a routine tour of the nation’s port facilities.

The union leaders expressed satisfaction with the current state of operations but raised concerns over the increasing number of accidents at the port, citing the need for strict adherence to safety standards and regulations.

Abi emphasised that the trend of accidents at the Warri port is unacceptable and must be stopped. He noted that the union is deeply concerned about the safety of its members and the potential for permanent disability or harm while working.

He called on the NPA to reactivate the use of tally clerks and onboard gangway security men to ensure security and safety within the port premises.

Abi also stressed the importance of complying with the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) code and maintaining a 24-hour security check. He urged the NPA to post its personnel to private jetties and oil and gas platforms in the region to enhance vigilance on security and safety.

He commended the Warri port management for their resilience and commitment to duty, expressing confidence in their ability to improve security. Abi promised the union’s continued support for workers and admonished them to maintain their work pace while prioritising safety.

In response, the NPA’s General Manager, Mrs. Stella Obiageli, thanked the MWUN leadership for their visit and prayed for their safe journey back home.
