The Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) has successfully installed new Aeronautical Fixed Telecommunication Network (AFTN) systems in 26 airports nationwide.

This significant milestone marks a major step forward in modernising Nigeria’s aeronautical communication infrastructure.

The new AFTN system, designed to utilise robust global satellite facilities, provides improved reliability, wider coverage, and enhanced message transmission efficiency. It will also serve as a dependable alternative to the Air Traffic Service Message Handling System (AMHS).

The AFTN system plays a critical role in ensuring timely and accurate dissemination of essential information, supporting safe aircraft operations, and reducing delays in communication between Air Traffic Control units and meteorological centres. Its standardised protocols ensure seamless communication between Nigeria and other states within the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) network.

A workshop was convened to familiarise technical and operational staff with the new AFTN systems, strengthen capacity in managing and troubleshooting the system, and share knowledge and best practices. The Director of Air Traffic Services, Mr. John Tayo, emphasised NAMA’s commitment to safety, efficiency, and technological advancement in Nigeria’s aviation sector.

The modernisation of AFTN is a demonstration of NAMA’s dedication to providing safe, efficient, and cost-effective air navigation services.

With the new system, Nigeria’s air traffic management is poised to meet the highest global standards, setting a benchmark for the aviation industry in Africa.
