The Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) has made history by becoming the first organisation to receive the Africa Airlines Association’s Free Route Airspace award on the continent.
NAMA Director of Air Traffic Services, Mr. John Tayo, received the award on behalf of the agency, recognising its exceptional service delivery, innovation, and dedication to the Free Route Airspace Project.

According to AFRAA Secretary General, Mr. Abderahmane Berthe, NAMA has been a pioneer in championing safety and competitiveness in Africa’s aviation industry. Nigeria’s successful implementation of the Free Route Airspace began on December 2, 2021, starting with the Kano Flight Information Region.
This initiative has yielded significant benefits, including reduced flight times, lower fuel consumption, decreased carbon dioxide emissions, and improved air traffic management efficiency.
The award highlights NAMA’s commitment to developing the country’s airspace in line with global standards. Tayo praised President Bola Tinubu for his support and described NAMA’s Managing Director, Engineer Farouk Umar, as a visionary leader who has elevated the agency to a global leader in airspace management and development.

NAMA plans to expand the Free Route Airspace across borders, collaborating with neighboring Flight Information Regions in West and Central Africa.
By working together with countries in the region, including Accra FIR, Niamey FIR, Ndjamena FIR, Douala FIR, and Brazzaville FIR, NAMA aims to further enhance the efficiency and safety of air travel.
