The President General of the Maritime Workers’ Union of Nigeria (MWUN), Comrade Francis Bunu Abi, has extended warm felicitations to Nigerians on the country’s 65th Independence Anniversary, marked on October 1, 2025.

While acknowledging the significance of this day in Nigeria’s history, Abi expressed mixed feelings about the nation’s progress since gaining independence.

According to him, Nigeria has faced numerous challenges and setbacks over the years, despite its vast natural resources and potential. The labour leader lamented the current state of hardship and poverty in the country, noting that Nigerians are still struggling to make ends meet despite the government’s promises and efforts.

However, he expressed optimism about the current administration’s renewed hope mantra and reforms, believing that they will yield positive results and bring relief to Nigerians. He urged Nigerians to remain patient and supportive, praying for the President and the Armed Forces as they work to address the country’s security and economic challenges.

The MWUN President also called on the government to prioritise the welfare of Nigerians, particularly in addressing the high cost of living, unemployment, and insecurity. He emphasised the need for immediate attention to the people’s social intervention, noting that the current situation is not only affecting their mental state but also deteriorating their health.

He concluded by urging Nigerians to celebrate the Independence Anniversary with hope for a better tomorrow, believing that the country is on course to reclaiming its glory.

Bunu congratulated Nigerians and wished them a happy Independence Day, reiterating the need for collective effort to build a better society for all.
