Adegboyega Oyetola, CON (right) on Nigeria’s election into the Council of the International Maritime Organisation’s (IMO) Council Elections in London.
It was significant diplomatic victory for Nigeria as it achieved secured a place in Category C of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) Council for the 2026 to 2027 biennium.
The election, which took place on November 28, 2025, during the IMO General Assembly in London, marked the country’s return to the influential council after a 14-year absence.

The Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, H.E. Adegboyega Oyetola, led the campaign and attributed the success to over a year of intensive diplomatic outreach, including shuttle diplomacy, targeted engagements, and sustained advocacy across countries and maritime blocs.
