…as Mobereola hails President Tinubu, Oyetola for landmark maritime victory
… charges staff on sustainability

Staff of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) have hosted the Director General, Dr. Dayo Mobereola, alongside members of the Executive Management, to a surprise reception in celebration of Nigeria’s successful election into the Category C Council of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO).
The event, held at the Agency’s Boardroom, brought together the Director General, Executive Director, Finance and Administration, Mr. Chudi Offodile; Executive Director, Maritime Labour and Cabotage Services, Mr. Jibril Abba; Directors, and other members of staff. The gathering was organised to mark Nigeria’s return to the IMO Council, where NIMASA serves as the nation’s focal agency.
Addressing staff at the reception, Mobereola described the achievement as a significant milestone for both the maritime sector and the country at large. He attributed the victory to the unwavering support of President Bola Tinubu, and the purposeful leadership of the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Dr. Adegboyega Oyetola.
According to him, “the support of President Bola Tinubu and the dynamic leadership of the Honourable Minister of Marine and Blue Economy were instrumental to this victory. Throughout the process, the Minister remained fully committed, providing strategic direction and personally leading engagements to canvass support from IMO member states.”

Mobereola also applauded NIMASA staff for their collective contributions to the success, noting that the Agency’s role as Nigeria’s IMO focal point made their daily efforts critical to the outcome.
“As staff of NIMASA, each and every one of you contributed whether directly or indirectly to Nigeria’s success at the IMO. The work you do daily has been central to achieving this victory,” he said.
While celebrating the achievement, the Director General urged staff to intensify their commitment, stressing that sustaining Nigeria’s presence on the IMO Council would require even greater effort.
“Winning the Category C Council seat is the easier part. The real challenge is sustainability. Getting to the top is one thing; staying there is another. To remain there, we need the dedication and support of every single member of staff of this Agency,” he added.
Nigeria was recently elected into the Category C Council of IMO for the 2026 to 2027 biennium, marking the country’s return to the Council after a 14-year absence.
