The Director General and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), Prof. Charles Anosike, led the agency’s delegation to the 5th Network for Education and Research on Peace and Sustainability (NERPS) Conference held from 4 to 7 March 2026 at the headquarters of the United Nations University (UNU) in Tokyo, Japan.
The NERPS 2026 Conference focused on the role of technology in advancing multilateral cooperation for peace and sustainability.
The event opened with a welcome address by the Rector of UNU and United Nations Under-Secretary-General, Prof. Tshilidzi Marwala.
This was followed by keynote presentations from the Executive Director of the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI), Dr. Måns Nilsson, and the President of Reach Alternatives (REALs), Rumiko Seya.
During the conference, Anosike and the NiMet delegation participated in several parallel sessions covering climate action, disaster resilience, migration, climate change mitigation, sustainable peace and security, sustainable agriculture, and environmental sustainability both on land and below water.
The team also contributed to discussions and reviews focusing on climate governance, urban resilience, equitable climate justice, transboundary resource management, as well as methods for monitoring and predicting environmental changes.
NiMet’s participation in the conference facilitated knowledge exchange and strengthened partnerships with international stakeholders, while helping to elevate Nigeria’s voice in global discussions on climate action and sustainable development.
