The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has taken a bold step toward a greener and more sustainable future with the deployment of electric vehicles (EVs) for airside operations at Nigeria’s five international airports — Lagos, Abuja, Kano, Port Harcourt, and Enugu.

This groundbreaking initiative marks the first-ever adoption of electric vehicles in the nation’s aviation sector, positioning NiMet as a frontrunner in driving environmental responsibility, energy efficiency, and operational excellence within the industry.

According to the Agency, the deployment aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which emphasises the transition to clean energy, climate resilience, and sustainable national growth. Each vehicle is capable of covering up to 200 kilometers per charge and will be supported by dedicated charging stations strategically installed at all five airports.

This creates a practical and eco-friendly ecosystem designed to sustain NiMet’s daily airside operations without reliance on fossil fuels.

Beyond promoting environmental protection, the EV introduction will enhance NiMet’s operational efficiency by providing quieter, faster, and more reliable airside logistics.

The new system will reduce downtime caused by fuel supply challenges, minimise maintenance costs, and improve turnaround times — all contributing to more efficient, cost-effective, and eco-conscious service delivery.

The use of electric vehicles offers multiple advantages, including zero emissions, lower noise levels, and reduced maintenance costs, while supporting Nigeria’s national carbon credit and climate action goals. By cutting emissions and energy consumption, NiMet is helping to align Nigeria’s aviation operations with global sustainability and environmental standards.

This milestone reflects the visionary leadership of the Director General/CEO of NiMetProfessor Charles Anosike, whose commitment to innovation, sustainability, and modernisation continues to transform the agency’s operations. Under his stewardship, NiMet has pursued forward-thinking initiatives that strengthen its role in climate monitoring, aviation safety, and green technology adoption.

“This initiative is part of NiMet’s long-term sustainability strategy. By integrating clean energy solutions into our daily operations, we are not only improving service delivery but also demonstrating Nigeria’s readiness to embrace environmentally responsible practices in aviation”, said Anosike.

With this achievement, NiMet reaffirms its position as a key player in Nigeria’s clean energy journey.
