Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer NRC, Kayode Opeifa

The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has condemned the alleged assault on a lecturer of the University of Ibadan, Dr. Mikail Abdussalam, at the Obafemi Awolowo Train Station in Moniya, Ibadan, and ordered an immediate investigation into the incident.

In a statement signed by its Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Kayode Opeifa, the corporation said it had taken serious note of media reports concerning the alleged incident and described it as unacceptable.

The NRC stressed that harassment, intimidation, or any form of misconduct towards passengers or members of the public runs contrary to its values and operational standards.

According to the corporation, management has directed a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the alleged assault, with a warning that any personnel found culpable would face appropriate disciplinary action in line with the organisation’s professional code of conduct and the laws of Nigeria.

“The Corporation views the incident with serious concern and wishes to state clearly that harassment, intimidation, or any form of misconduct towards passengers or members of the public is unacceptable”, the statement said.

The NRC expressed regret over the incident and apologised to Abdussalam for the distress caused, assuring that steps are being taken to prevent a recurrence.

It also reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that all passengers and visitors across its stations and facilities are treated with dignity, respect, and professionalism.

The corporation added that measures are being reinforced across its operations to strengthen adherence to customer service standards and safeguard the rights of rail passengers.
