The Omi Eko Project, a €410 million sustainable water transportation initiative designed to ease road congestion and transform urban mobility across the Lagos metropolis, has announced the appointment of Dr. Segun Alabi as its Head of Communications and Media.
The Omi Eko Project, supported by the European Union and private sector partners, is a flagship intervention of the Lagos State Government aimed at unlocking the State’s vast but underutilised waterways. The project seeks to promote efficient, safe, and environmentally responsible transportation while advancing the State’s broader blue economy and sustainability objectives.
Announcing the appointment, the Special Adviser on Blue Economy to the Governor of Lagos State and Project Coordinator, Mr. Oluwadamilola Emmanuel, expressed confidence in Alabi’s ability to lead the project’s communications function at a critical stage of its implementation. He noted that the success of the Omi Eko Project depends not only on infrastructure delivery but also on effective public engagement and stakeholder communication.
In his new role, Alabi will be responsible for developing and implementing integrated communication strategies, managing media relations, and driving public awareness of the project’s objectives, milestones, and long-term benefits to Lagos residents.
Speaking on the appointment, Emmanuel said: “Dr. Alabi is a highly accomplished Corporate Affairs professional with extensive experience across Pay TV, financial services, real estate, business membership organisations, and the manufacturing sector. His depth of expertise will significantly strengthen the Omi Eko Project’s communication, stakeholder engagement, and public trust”.
Alabi most recently served as Assistant Director, Corporate Affairs and Communications at the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN), where he led corporate communications, public affairs, and event management activities. His professional experience spans reputation management, government relations, corporate social responsibility, stakeholder engagement, public policy advocacy, and digital and social media strategy.
He is widely regarded as a consummate communications professional with a strong capacity to strategically manage information in support of organisational goals and public confidence.
Reacting to his appointment, Alabi said:
“I am excited to join the Omi Eko Project team. This opportunity is truly a dream come true. While the task ahead is enormous, it is certainly achievable, and I am committed to supporting the project’s vision of delivering efficient and sustainable water transportation for Lagos”.
Alabi holds a Doctorate degree in English from the University of Lagos, with a specialisation in Language Use and Communication.
The Omi Eko Project represents a major step toward decongesting Lagos roads, improving connectivity, and promoting environmentally responsible urban transport through the strategic use of waterways.
