Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, has emphasised the importance of ocean stewardship and sustainable blue economy growth during the 2025 World Maritime Day celebration in Lagos.
The event, held at Eko Hotel and Suites, highlighted the theme “Our Ocean, Our Obligation, Our Opportunity”, which underscores the need for collective responsibility in protecting the ocean and unlocking its economic potential.
Oyetola noted that the ocean, which covers over 70 per cent of the planet and produces up to 80 per cent of the earth’s oxygen, is under threat from pollution, overfishing, and climate change. He urged Nigerians and the international community to recommit to protecting ocean resources and ensuring sustainability for future generations.

The Minister highlighted progress under the Tinubu administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, including modernisation of port infrastructure and adoption of sustainable maritime policies. He also emphasised the potential of the blue economy as a new frontier for diversification beyond oil and gas, citing opportunities in renewable ocean energy, marine biotechnology, and sustainable aquaculture.
He extended an invitation to the diplomatic community, noting that the maritime sector is a natural platform for international cooperation and diplomacy. He concluded by renewing the pledge to protect the ocean and harness its promise wisely and responsibly for the benefit of future generations.
The event featured goodwill addresses from stakeholders, prize presentations to essay competition winners, and discussions on the importance of shipping safety, maritime security, and the marine environment.
