The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has recorded a fresh breakthrough in its fight against infrastructure vandalism with the arrest and prosecution of a suspected railway vandal in Lagos.

The suspect, Bashiru Hafeez, 32 years,  was apprehended on Thursday, March 26, 2026, by security operatives from Multi Eye Security Services during a routine patrol at the Mobolaji Johnson Train Station.

He was reportedly caught with 15 pandrol clips – vital rail fasteners suspected to have been illegally removed from the narrow gauge rail line at Alagomeji within the Lagos rail corridor.

Authorities said the removal of such components poses grave safety risks, including possible train derailments.

Following his arrest, the suspect was handed over to the Railway Police Command for further investigation and prosecution.

He was subsequently arraigned before a Lagos court and remanded at the Ikoyi Correctional Centre, with the case adjourned to April 24, 2026.

Reacting to the development, NRC Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Kayode Opeifa, reiterated the Corporation’s zero-tolerance stance on vandalism, describing it as economic sabotage capable of endangering lives and undermining critical national infrastructure.

He commended the security personnel for their vigilance and prompt action, assuring that the NRC, in collaboration with security agencies, will intensify efforts to track down and prosecute individuals and syndicates involved in railway asset destruction.

Opeifa also issued a stern warning that anyone found vandalising railway infrastructure or trading in stolen rail materials will face the full weight of the law.

The Corporation urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities along railway corridors, stressing that the rail system remains a vital national asset that requires collective protection.

The NRC further reassured passengers and stakeholders of its continued commitment to ensuring safe, secure, and efficient rail operations nationwide.
