Policymakers, industry leaders, academics, and regional stakeholders are set to converge in Lagos on June 17, 2026, for the Global Transport Policy (GTP) Annual Multimodal Roundtable—a high-level forum focused on redefining the future of Nigeria’s transport system.

The event will take place at the Lagos Marriott Hotel Ikeja and will spotlight practical, forward-looking solutions aimed at improving safety, efficiency, and sustainability across the country’s transport networks.

With the theme, “Transforming Nigeria’s Transport System: Integrating Solutions for Safety, Efficiency, and Sustainability”, the roundtable has, over the past three years, evolved into a major platform for policy dialogue, bringing together decision-makers from federal and state governments, private sector players, academia, and regional bodies, including the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

As Nigeria intensifies efforts to boost domestic productivity and harness opportunities under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), stakeholders said the need for a more coordinated and efficient transport system has become increasingly urgent.

Despite ongoing reforms, challenges persist. Logistics inefficiencies continue to drive distribution costs to between 20 and 30 per cent of the value of goods—significantly higher than the global benchmark of 8 to 11 per cent.

Additionally, only about 60 per cent of communities have access to basic road infrastructure, limiting market access and economic inclusion.

Speaking ahead of the event, the Chief Operating Officer of Global Transport Policy, Onoruoiza Onuchi, emphasised the importance of integrated planning and institutional coordination in addressing these challenges.

“Nigeria’s competitiveness depends on how efficiently we move people and goods”, he said.

“This roundtable will unite public and private sector leaders to develop coordinated strategies; from bonded multimodal corridors to the establishment of a National Multimodal Logistics Council aimed at unlocking safer, greener, and more efficient transport systems”.

The programme will feature expert panel sessions addressing key reform areas, including institutional strengthening, workforce development, seamless and integrated mobility systems, smart and safe transport solutions, and strategies for achieving a greener transport future.

Top government officials, transport experts, and private sector leaders are expected to participate as speakers and panelists, offering insights on policy, technology, and infrastructure development.

The President of Nigeria is expected to attend alongside senior federal ministers and heads of key transport agencies, who will deliver keynote addresses.

The roundtable will also spotlight recent policy milestones, including the newly approved National Land Transport Policy, while exploring opportunities for enhanced public-private partnerships, deployment of Intelligent Transport Systems, and investments in low-carbon mobility options such as electric vehicles.

Organisers say the event is expected to yield actionable recommendations and foster strategic partnerships aimed at accelerating corridor development, improving customs and regulatory efficiency, and ultimately reducing logistics costs for businesses and consumers.

Global Transport Policy has invited corporate organisations, development partners, transport operators, logistics companies, civil society groups, and the media to participate in the dialogue and contribute to translating policy into tangible outcomes for Lagos and Nigeria at large.
