The global maritime industry is taking a major step toward digital transformation as SITA, in collaboration with IDsure and Columbia Shipmanagement, has launched a digital identity pilot designed to modernise the verification of seafarers’ credentials.
The initiative, part of the SmartSea strategy, introduces aviation-grade identity technology into maritime operations—replacing long-standing reliance on paper documentation and manual verification processes.
Now live with Columbia Shipmanagement, the pilot focuses on digitising professional certificates for ship crews. These verified credentials are stored in a digital Seafarer Handbook, enabling real-time access and authentication by port authorities and operators. Tasks that previously took hours can now be completed in minutes, significantly improving efficiency and reducing administrative bottlenecks.
Momentum is already building beyond the pilot phase, with the Bahamas Maritime Authority partnering with IDsure to introduce digital seafarer record books and competency certificates—signalling growing global interest in secure, paperless systems.
The solution operates through a GDPR-compliant mobile application developed by IDsure and powered by SITA’s identity verification services. It allows seafarers to securely store and control their personal data, while enabling instant verification by authorities at ports of call.
Speaking on the development, Senior Vice President at SITA, Pedro Alves, said:
“This project is a glimpse into the future of global mobility. Across every mode of transport, identity is still managed through paper-based and manual systems. By extending trusted digital identity to the maritime sector, we are showing how secure technology can enable systems to work together while protecting personal data. It means crew identities can be checked instantly and safely wherever they travel, reducing delays and easing administrative burdens for operators”.
He added that the initiative goes beyond maritime innovation:
“What we are building with IDsure and our partners in the SmartSea ecosystem is not just innovation at sea, but a model for how digital identity can connect the world safely and seamlessly—starting with seafarers and extending to all ocean users”.
Also commenting, Chief Executive Officer of IDsure, Jesper Holmgren, said:
“With this pilot, we are helping maritime authorities, training institutes, and shipping operators take a practical step toward digital certification. Working with SITA and Columbia Shipmanagement, we are replacing fragmented, paper-based processes with a more secure and verifiable digital approach built for global shipping”.
The pilot, initially focused on bridge officers, is expected to expand as more maritime authorities explore digital certification solutions.
At its core, the initiative supports an industry employing over two million seafarers across approximately 75,000 merchant vessels worldwide. By linking digital certification with Port State Control processes, the system enhances compliance while simplifying day-to-day maritime operations.
The broader SmartSea programme aims to bring aviation-level digital maturity into the maritime sector by connecting people, data, and operations. Stakeholders said the pilot represents a significant milestone in building a more efficient, secure, and interconnected global shipping ecosystem.
