The Maritime Workers’ Union of Nigeria (MWUN), under the leadership of its President General, Comrade Bunu Abi, has congratulated the Honourable Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, on Nigeria’s successful election into the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) Category C Council seat.

The union described this achievement as a milestone for both the nation and its maritime sector.

Abi noted that the Minister has brought pride to the country by securing one of the highly competitive seats within the IMO, thereby elevating Nigeria’s standing among the community of maritime nations worldwide. He applauded Oyetola’s exceptional accomplishment, stressing that such a significant victory was made possible through unwavering hard work, strategic foresight, and a well-coordinated inter-ministerial campaign committee that surpassed the country’s performances in the 2011 and 2019 contests.

The prominent maritime labour leader also commended the Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Dr. Abubakar Dantsoho, for his dedication and commitment to advancing the sector.

He affirmed that Dantsoho’s contributions greatly complemented Minister Oyetola’s efforts in achieving this global recognition, adding that sustained synergy among all maritime regulatory agencies would propel the industry to unprecedented heights.

Abi, a veteran sailor and seasoned maritime administrator, further extolled Oyetola’s deep understanding and effective management of the Marine and Blue Economy Ministry.

He emphasised that the Minister has exceeded expectations, and this new IMO milestone has placed Nigeria in a positive global spotlight, significantly enhancing the country’s maritime profile.
