A stalwart of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Imo State and prominent real estate developer, Chief Barrister Success Obioma Akagburuonye, has urged politicians and business leaders to honour agreements and conduct their affairs with the fear of God, as he revealed that he recently survived an alleged assassination attempt.

Akagburuonye made the call while hosting members of the Owerri Senatorial Zone Council of Elders at his country home in Ogbor-Uvuru, Aboh Mbaise Local Government Area, during consultations aimed at selecting an acceptable governorship candidate for the zone. The meeting followed the declaration by Governor Hope Uzodimma that he would endorse a successor from the Owerri zone.

Speaking to journalists after the consultation, the APC chieftain, who is also positioning himself as a prospective governorship aspirant, narrated how hired assassins allegedly laid ambush for him along the Owerri Airport Road and around his ancestral home.

According to him, timely intelligence reports uncovered the plot, leading to the arrest of some suspects. He, however, declined to disclose details of their detention, citing ongoing security investigations.

“Unfortunately for them, security intelligence revealed their evil plans, which led to some arrests. I cannot disclose where they are being held so as not to jeopardise investigations”, he said.

Akagburuonye, who also convenes the political movement Hope Rising for Imolites, alleged that preliminary security findings pointed to a former governor of Imo State as the sponsor of the arrested suspects.

He claimed that the alleged plot was linked to a prolonged dispute over landed properties in Abuja, accusing the former governor of attempting to unlawfully confiscate his assets.

“I have no reason to doubt the security intelligence. This former governor has dangerously crossed my path and has been using every means to deprive me of my lawfully acquired properties in Abuja”, he stated.

Recounting the origin of the dispute, Akagburuonye said he had a brief business interaction with the former governor in 2018 through the latter’s elder sister, involving discussions on land matters that were later aborted.

“That was the end of the business. However, he has since resorted to toxic tactics to take over some of my plots in Abuja. The matter is currently before the Court of Appeal in Abuja, and I believe he is now bent on my elimination because of my hard-won properties”, he alleged.

He called on political actors to shun violence and intimidation, stressing that politics and business should never be pursued at the expense of human life.
