The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has announced an increase in the number of trips on the Abuja–Kaduna Train Service (AKTS), effective Friday, March 6, 2026, in response to sustained passenger demand along the corridor.
According to the Corporation, the expanded timetable is designed to provide more travel options, improve operational flexibility, and further enhance service delivery on one of the country’s busiest rail routes.
The Abuja–Kaduna corridor had previously experienced operational setbacks following the March 28, 2022 bomb attack and the August 26, 2025 derailment. These incidents led to a temporary reduction in available rolling stock from three train sets to one, the introduction of Temporary Speed Restrictions (TSR) as a safety measure, and a reduction in the number of daily trips.
With operational stability restored and gradual easing of some temporary speed restrictions, the Corporation is now scaling up services to better meet commuter expectations and growing demand.
Under the revised schedule:
Fridays and Sundays: Three trips will operate. Departures from Idu are at 7:45 a.m. and 3:15 p.m., while departure from Rigasa is at 11:30 a.m.
Saturdays and Mondays: Three trips will also operate. Departures from Rigasa are at 7:15 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., while departure from Idu is at 11:00 a.m.
Tuesdays and Thursdays: Two trips will continue to operate, with departure from Idu at 8:45 a.m. and return service from Rigasa at 2:30 p.m.
It said all services will continue to make scheduled stops at Kubwa, while
passengers were advised to take note of the revised timetable and plan their journeys accordingly.
The NRC reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening capacity, improving reliability, enhancing safety standards, and delivering a more efficient and customer-focused rail transport service for Nigerians.
