The President-General of the Maritime Workers’ Union of Nigeria (MWUN), Francis Abi, has called on Muslim faithful to uphold the values of love, peace, and hope as they celebrate Eid al-Fitr, marking the end of the holy month of Ramadan.
In a goodwill message to Muslims in Nigeria and across the world, the labour leader emphasised the importance of reflecting on the spiritual lessons of Ramadan, describing the fasting period as a time of purification, sacrifice, and renewed connection with Almighty Allah.
Bunu urged adherents of Islam to emulate the exemplary life of Prophet Muhammad, noting that his teachings were rooted in compassion, charity, and peaceful coexistence. He stressed that the true essence of Eid lies not just in celebration, but in demonstrating these virtues in everyday interactions with others, regardless of religious or cultural differences.
According to him, genuine faith must be reflected in the ability of individuals to live harmoniously with people of other beliefs. He noted that humanity shares a common origin under one Creator, making mutual respect and tolerance indispensable for peaceful coexistence.
“Faith in Almighty Allah is incomplete if we cannot live side by side with our brothers and sisters of other religions. Until we recognise our shared humanity and accord each other respect, lasting peace may remain elusive”, he stated.
The MWUN President-General further highlighted the common foundations of Islam and Christianity, describing both as religions that promote peace, love, and service to humanity. While acknowledging differences in modes of worship, he maintained that all faiths ultimately point to the same divine source.
Abi also cautioned against acts of violence carried out in the name of religion, stressing that no individual has the authority to take another’s life under the pretext of serving God. He affirmed that ultimate judgment belongs to Almighty Allah alone.
Extending his prayers to Muslims globally, he expressed concern over ongoing conflicts in parts of the Middle East, describing them as avoidable crises that continue to cause loss of lives and destruction. He called for an immediate end to hostilities and urged all parties involved to embrace dialogue and peace.
The labour leader also addressed security challenges within Nigeria, particularly in the North-East, appealing to those engaged in violent activities to lay down their arms and choose the path of peace. He reiterated that Islam, as taught by Prophet Muhammad, is fundamentally a religion of love and harmony.
Abi concluded by wishing Muslims a peaceful and joyous Eid celebration, while advocating for a crime-free society during the festive period and beyond.
