Dr. Odunayo Ani

The Women’s International Shipping and Trading Association Nigeria has re-elected its President, Dr. Odunayo Ani, signaling renewed confidence in her leadership as the association charts a more ambitious course for women’s participation in the maritime sector.

At its 2026 Annual General Meeting (AGM) held in Lagos on April 30, members and industry stakeholders gathered to review the association’s progress, reinforce governance structures, and set strategic priorities for the coming years.

Dr. Ani, who also serves as Director of Finance at the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, secured a second term alongside a newly elected executive committee. Her re-election follows what members described as a transformative first tenure marked by institutional growth, stronger global partnerships, and increased visibility for Nigerian women in international maritime circles.

In her address, the WISTA Nigeria President highlighted key milestones achieved under her leadership, including deeper collaboration with WISTA International, expanded representation of Nigerian members in global committees, and sustained advocacy for women in coastal communities. She also pointed to the successful celebration of the association’s 30th anniversary as a defining moment in its history.

“We are deeply honoured by the trust reposed in us. Our priority remains to elevate the role of women in the maritime industry while strengthening WISTA Nigeria as a platform for professional excellence, collaboration, and impact”, she said.

The AGM also reinforced the association’s commitment to transparency and accountability, as members reviewed and adopted its financial reports, underscoring a culture of responsible governance.

The newly constituted executive team reflects a diverse blend of expertise across the maritime and logistics value chain. Among them are Captain Edidiong Akpanebe-Sola Obalo as Vice President, Lillian Nneji as General Secretary, Hannah Adaba as Treasurer, Vivian Chimezie-Azubuike as Public Relations Officer, Toyin Oyeleke as Assistant General Secretary, and Aisha Cole as Assistant Treasurer.

Looking ahead, Ani unveiled a forward-looking agenda centered on expanding opportunities for women and strengthening industry collaboration. A key highlight is the upcoming 8th WISTA Africa Regional Conference scheduled for June 25 to 26, 2026, at Eko Hotel & Suites, where maritime leaders from across the continent are expected to converge to discuss policy, innovation, and inclusion.

The AGM concluded with a renewed commitment to positioning WISTA Nigeria as a leading voice for women in maritime, driven by strong leadership, accountability, and a clear strategic vision for the future.
