The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) has intensified its campaign against stowaways by taking public awareness directly to coastal communities.
As part of the outreach, the Agency recently engaged community leaders, youths, and residents of Snake Island, Lagos, on the dangers, legal consequences, and global implications of stowing away on vessels.
Speaking during the engagement, Head of ISPS at NIMASA, Mudi Isa, said stowaway incidents continue to damage Nigeria’s reputation in the international maritime community. He reaffirmed the Agency’s commitment to preventive awareness through grassroots engagement.
Residents who attended the campaign commended NIMASA, describing the initiative as “timely and impactful” in addressing the menace.
According to a statement from the Deputy Director/Head, Public Relations, NIMASA, Edward Osagie, the grassroots campaign aligned with NIMASA’s broader mandate to improve maritime security and protect Nigeria’s image under the Marine and Blue Economy agenda.
