The Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), Professor Charles Anosike, has received the Changemaker Climate Leadership Award at the DTN@100 Times Heroes Awards, held on November 3, 2026, at Harbour Point, Victoria Island, Lagos.
The award, presented as part of the centenary celebration of The Daily Times of Nigeria, recognises Anosike’s contributions to meteorological development, institutional reforms and the deployment of weather and climate information to support national development.
It also acknowledges his efforts to reposition NiMet as a technology-driven, responsive and service-oriented institution, strengthening its capacity to provide weather and climate intelligence that supports economic activities, protects lives and enhances national resilience.
Since his appointment by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in December 2023, Anosike has pursued an ambitious reform agenda aimed at strengthening the Agency’s scientific capabilities, modernising its operations and ensuring that meteorological information delivers measurable public value.
Under his leadership, greater emphasis has been placed on the strategic role of meteorology in critical sectors of the Nigerian economy, particularly aviation, agriculture, disaster risk management and climate adaptation.
His administration has also strengthened NiMet’s engagement in global conversations on climate resilience, early warning systems, sustainable investment and the application of scientific knowledge to development.
The recognition comes amid growing awareness of the importance of timely and reliable weather and climate information in reducing disaster risks, protecting livelihoods and supporting sustainable economic growth.
The Changemaker Climate Leadership Award, therefore, highlights not only Anosike’s leadership but also the institutional progress recorded under his stewardship, particularly the growing relevance of meteorological services in addressing climate variability and change, improving national preparedness and supporting informed decision-making.
For NiMet, the honour further reinforces its commitment to delivering timely, accurate and reliable weather and climate information in support of national safety, economic productivity and sustainable development.
Under Anosike’s leadership, the Agency continues to expand its role beyond conventional weather forecasting to providing actionable meteorological intelligence that safeguards lives, supports livelihoods and contributes to Nigeria’s development priorities.
