The President of the Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (ATSSSAN), Comrade John Ogbe, has declared that the union will take a hard stance against drug abuse in the aviation sector, warning that no member found indulging in illicit substances at the airport will be spared.
Ogbe made this known while leading newly elected ATSSSAN executives on a courtesy visit to the management of Skyway Aviation Handling Company (SAHCO). He assured management of the union’s readiness to collaborate with other industry stakeholders to decisively tackle the growing menace.
He also urged SAHCO management to commence the implementation of the staff long service award as provided for in the conditions of service, stressing the importance of rewarding dedication and commitment among workers.
In addition, the ATSSSAN president called on the company to prioritise female staff in outstation training programmes whenever such opportunities arise, as part of efforts to promote inclusivity and capacity development.
Ogbe expressed appreciation to SAHCO management for the warm reception accorded his team, reiterating that one of the core pillars of ATSSSAN is genuine collaboration. According to him, the union understands the sensitive nature and dynamics of the aviation industry and remains committed to constructive engagement.
He further encouraged SAHCO management to extend trust to the union’s branch executives, noting that they were freely elected by members and are positioned to foster mutual understanding and cooperation. He reaffirmed ATSSSAN’s commitment to maintaining a productive working relationship with the company.
Earlier in her remarks, the Managing Director of SAHCO, Mrs. Adenike Aboderin, described Ogbe as a passionate advocate for workers’ welfare, recalling his active role in championing staff interests during his time as an executive member at the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN).
She commended his resilience and dedication, particularly during negotiations, and acknowledged that both SAHCO and the union ultimately share the same goal, albeit through different approaches.
Aboderin emphasised that modern unionism must align with 21st-century realities, stressing that discipline should remain a guiding principle. She cautioned that union membership should not be used as a shield for indiscipline or truancy.
The SAHCO boss also urged ATSSSAN to intensify efforts in mentoring its members against drug abuse, noting that the trend is becoming increasingly alarming within the sector.
She highlighted the company’s commitment to staff welfare, pointing to the recent 40 per cent salary increase for employees as part of ongoing efforts to enhance workforce satisfaction.
On the issue of long service awards, Aboderin disclosed that the initiative has already been approved, adding that management is actively working to clear the existing backlog.
