The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) and the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) have embarked on a collaborative effort to implement biometric identification cards for Dockworkers’ and Seafarers’ branches.

This initiative aims to distinguish between legitimate union members and those falsely claiming membership, thereby enhancing safety and security within the maritime industry.

The biometric registration process will ensure that only authorised personnel are identified and cleared to work in the seaports, reducing the risk of theft, pilfering, and other security breaches.

This move is expected to promote a more secure ports environment, benefiting both the industry stakeholders and the general public.

In addition to the biometric identification initiative, MWUN and NIMASA are also working together on a Seafarers Recreation Centre project in Apapa. The project, which has been in discussion since the previous administration, aims to provide a safe and recreational space for seafarers, promoting their well-being and quality of life.

NIMASA’s Director General, Dr. Dayo Mobereola, has reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to the project, ensuring its completion and operationalisation.

The collaboration between MWUN and NIMASA demonstrates a shared commitment to enhancing the maritime industry’s safety, security, and overall efficiency.

Both parties have expressed hope for a continued and fruitful partnership, leveraging their synergy to drive progress and development in the sector.
