Ethiopia is charting a bold new course for African air travel with the development of the Bishoftu International Airport (BIA)—a landmark greenfield project envisioned as the continent’s next major aviation gateway.

Situated roughly 40 kilometers southwest of Addis Ababa, the airport is designed to relieve capacity pressures at the bustling Addis Ababa Bole International Airport while elevating Ethiopia’s role in regional and global aviation networks.

Built through a phased development strategy, BIA will scale its infrastructure to match rising demand. The first phase—valued at approximately USD 12.5 billion and targeted for completion by 2030—will be capable of handling up to 60 million passengers per year. At full build-out, the airport’s capacity will reach an astounding 110 million passengers annually, positioning it as Africa’s largest airport and a transformative engine for trade, tourism, and cross-border investment.

“Bishoftu International Airport marks a historic leap in Africa’s aviation journey, significantly enhancing trade, tourism, and business across the continent and beyond”, Group CEO of Ethiopian Airlines, Mesfin Tasew, said.

“With its cutting-edge technology, sustainable design, and unparalleled connectivity, the new airport positions Ethiopia to become the aviation capital of Africa. I call on global financiers to join us in bringing this visionary project to life”.

Ethiopian Airlines Group (EAG), the project sponsor, is leading the initiative with the African Development Bank (AfDB) serving as Initial Mandated Lead Arranger (IMLA). Dar Al-Handasah Consultants and KPMG are acting as technical and financial advisors, while Clyde & Co provides legal guidance.

Momentum continues to build: EAG has released the Project Information Memorandum, Financial Model, and related documents to potential lenders—an important step toward financial close. Prequalification of EPC contractors is already underway, with bid submissions expected by mid-December 2025, signaling the transition from planning to active procurement.

The project will be showcased at the Africa Investment Forum (AIF) Market Days in Rabat, Morocco, from 26–28 November 2025, where it is poised to attract strong interest from development banks, commercial lenders, ECAs, and institutional investors.

With its vision, scale, and strategic location, Bishoftu International Airport is set to become a defining national achievement for Ethiopia and a shining symbol of Africa’s aviation and infrastructure transformation.
