The Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) and the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) have confirmed a boat incident involving a Savvy Marine passenger vessel on Tuesday, December 30, 2025, about 8:35 p.m., along the Nigerdock axis of the Igbologun water channel.

The vessel was reported to be en route from Ilashe Beach House at the time of the incident. Upon receiving a distress alert, LASWA and NIWA immediately activated their Search and Rescue (SAR) operations. The response teams worked swiftly and in close coordination with the Marine Police and other emergency responders.

As of this update, four passengers have been rescued and taken to a nearby hospital, where they are receiving medical care. Regrettably, six passengers were recovered deceased at the scene. Search and rescue efforts are still ongoing to ensure all individuals involved are accounted for.

Preliminary assessments suggest the mishap may have resulted from a collision with a submerged object; however, investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause. 

LASWA and NIWA assure the public that a comprehensive investigation will be conducted, and further updates will be provided as details emerge.

The two agencies extend their deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims. The authorities reaffirm their unwavering commitment to safety on Lagos inland waterways and strongly emphasised strict adherence to all safety regulations, including proper navigation practices and full compliance with the No Night Travel policy.

Members of the public were urged to remain calm and rely only on verified information from LASWA, NIWA, and other official sources.
