Cross River State witnessed a radiant display of unity, gratitude, and hope as His Excellency, Senator (Prince) Bassey Otu, led the official switching-on of the 2025 Christmas lights in Calabar—the symbolic heart of the state’s cultural and tourism identity.
Addressing distinguished guests, citizens, and visitors who gathered for the ceremony, Governor Otu described the event as an opportunity not only to usher in the Christmas season, but also to celebrate the enduring values of love, kindness, and generosity that the season represents. He emphasised that the illumination of Calabar’s skyline mirrors the collective journey of the state, shaped through the dedication and sacrifices of past leaders.
Honouring Predecessors and Their Legacies
In a moving tribute, Governor Otu recognised former governors whose contributions remain cornerstones in Cross River State’s development trajectory.
He praised Dr. Clement Ebri for his humility, visionary leadership, and foundational investments in agriculture, education, health, and cultural infrastructure, including the completion of the State Cultural Centre and the advent of quality television broadcasting in the state.
The Governor celebrated Mr. Donald Duke, whose creativity and boldness transformed Cross River State into a national and international tourist destination. He noted Duke’s establishment of Carnival Calabar, revitalization of Obudu Cattle Ranch, and creation of the Tinapa Business and Leisure Resort, as well as the founding of the Cross River University of Technology.
He further acknowledged Senator Liyel Imoke for his administrative expertise, passion for education, and rural development. Governor Otu highlighted Imoke’s reforms in procurement, social welfare, and healthcare, as well as his role in strengthening educational institutions across the state.
Governor Otu also commended Senator Ben Ayade for his energetic and unconventional approach to leadership, particularly his industrialization drive, the creation of Cally Air, and policies aimed at empowering youths. He noted Ayade’s significant political decision that maintained stability and tradition within the state’s governance structure.
A Commitment to Continuity and Transformation
Referencing the literary inspiration of T.S. Eliot, Governor Otu reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to sustaining existing infrastructure, renewing aging systems, and building innovative solutions for the future. He emphasised that the present government is committed to transforming human capital, tourism, rural development, and industrialisation into tangible improvements in the lives of Cross Riverians.
“We are translators and transformers”, he stated. “We shall not disappoint, as the evidence on ground has shown within the period of our operations”.
A Message of Hope for the Festive Season
As the Christmas lights came alive across Calabar, Governor Otu urged citizens to reflect on the state’s shared journey and embrace optimism for the future.
“Merry Christmas, and may our state shine like a beacon of hope and prosperity, strength and growth, love and progress now and always, for the betterment of mankind and to the glory of God”, he concluded.
