Jane Ogwo (L) & Nnamdi Nwanne (R)

As the AMSAY Conference celebrates its 10th anniversary (2016 to 2026), a decade-long review of its academic honours has spotlighted an extraordinary and still-unmatched achievement by two female graduates.

In the history of the conference’s Best Graduating Maritime Students Awards (BEMASA), two women – Nnamdi Nwanne and Jane Ogwo have accomplished the rare feat of winning three major awards in a single edition—an achievement that remains unbroken by any other student, male or female.

The record was first set at the 2018 AMSAY Conference by Nnamdi Nwanne, a Marine Engineering graduate of Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH). She emerged as:

  • Best Graduated Marine Engineering Student (2017)
  • Best Graduated Female Maritime Student (2017)
  • Overall Best Graduated Maritime Student in Nigeria (2017)

Nwanne achieved the milestone with a CGPA of 3.85 (Distinction), claiming three out of the ten awards presented that year by Platforms Communications.

A year later, at the 2019 AMSAY Conference, Jane Ogwo of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO), replicated the feat with an even higher academic distinction. With an outstanding CGPA of 4.90, the Maritime Management Technology graduate won:

  • Best Graduated Maritime Management Technology Student (2018)
  • Best Graduated Female Maritime Student (2018)
  • Overall Best Graduated Maritime Student in Nigeria (2018)

Her performance also secured three out of the ten available awards for that year.

Despite the passage of time and the emergence of new graduates, no student has since matched this triple-award milestone, cementing both women’s legacy as exceptional figures in AMSAY history.

As anticipation builds for the 10th anniversary edition of the conference, stakeholders and participants are keen to see whether a new record-breaker will emerge or if the long-standing benchmark set by Nwanne and Ogwo will remain untouched.

Their stories continue to serve as a source of inspiration for aspiring maritime professionals, highlighting the rewards of academic excellence and dedication.
