Nigeria’s aviation sector took centre stage at the 75th Airports Council International (ACI) World Governing Board meeting as the Managing Director of FAAN, Olubunmi Kuku, advocated stronger focus on sustainability, security, and operational resilience across global airports.
Delivering a second intervention during the high-level gathering, held from March 28 to April 3, 2026, Kuku underscored the importance of building environmentally sustainable and climate-resilient airport infrastructure, particularly in developing regions.
She noted that airports must align with global climate goals by adopting green technologies, reducing carbon emissions, and improving energy efficiency, while maintaining operational excellence.
Kuku also highlighted the growing importance of aviation security, stressing the need for intelligence-driven systems, advanced screening technologies, and enhanced inter-agency cooperation to tackle emerging threats.
As the Vice President and Permanent Member of ACI Africa, she called for increased capacity building and knowledge sharing among member states to strengthen safety and security frameworks across the continent.
She further pointed to Nigeria’s ongoing efforts in upgrading airport facilities and enhancing security architecture, positioning the country as a key player in Africa’s aviation growth story.
She concluded by urging global stakeholders to ensure inclusive development that allows African airports to compete effectively while contributing meaningfully to the future of international air travel.
