The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has announced the successful conclusion of the federal government–approved 50 per cent fare discount on passenger train services across the country, describing the festive operation as highly impactful and operationally successful.
The yuletide fare reduction, introduced to ease the cost of travel during the festive season, witnessed remarkable passenger turnout nationwide. Thousands of Nigerians embraced the initiative, enjoying safer, more affordable, and comfortable rail travel to various destinations.
Feedback from passengers reflected widespread appreciation, with many describing the discount as a timely intervention that significantly reduced festive travel expenses while strengthening confidence in rail transportation.
Throughout the period, all operational corridors recorded steady activity. The standard gauge routes of Lagos–Ibadan, Abuja–Kaduna, and Warri–Itakpe, alongside the narrow gauge Mass Transit Train (MTT) services, experienced consistent passenger flow, orderly station operations, and punctual train departures.
Service delivery remained robust, with most trains operating according to schedule and passenger demand effectively managed across corridors.
The Corporation reports that the festive train operations were largely hitch-free, underscoring the professionalism, discipline, and dedication of NRC personnel. Ticketing systems, both online and onsite functioned efficiently, while customer service teams provided vital assistance, particularly to first-time rail users. The support of security agencies and other key stakeholders was also instrumental in maintaining safety and ensuring smooth station and onboard operations.
NRC Management expressed sincere appreciation to passengers for their cooperation and understanding throughout the period. The Corporation also acknowledged the vital role of the media, whose extensive coverage boosted public awareness of the initiative and further enhanced the positive perception of rail transport during the festive season.
The NRC reaffirmed its commitment to delivering improved rail services, expanding access to affordable transportation, and supporting the federal government’s Renewed Hope Agenda through people-centered initiatives that deliver tangible benefits to Nigerians.
As normal fare regimes resume across all corridors, passengers are assured of the Corporation’s continued focus on efficiency, safety, and passenger comfort across the national rail network.
The 50 per cent festive fare discount officially ended on Sunday, January 4, 2026.
