The Lagos State Government has approved a three-month rebate period for motorists to replace faded or unreadable vehicle number plates, a move aimed at improving road safety, strengthening security, and enhancing vehicle identification across the state.

The initiative, approved by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, was announced by the Permanent Secretary of the Motor Vehicles Administration Agency (MVAA), Mr. Rasheed Muri-Okunola. He described the policy as a proactive and citizen-friendly step designed to encourage compliance while reducing the financial burden on vehicle owners.

According to Muri-Okunola, clear and legible number plates are vital for effective traffic control, crime detection, and overall public safety, noting that worn or faded plates often obstruct the work of traffic officials and law enforcement agencies.

“This three-month rebate gives motorists ample time to replace worn-out plates at a reduced cost, while contributing to safer and better-regulated roads in Lagos”, he said.

The rebate applies to vehicle owners whose number plates have deteriorated over time due to prolonged use and weather exposure. Motorists are advised to visit the MVAA One-Stop Centre in Oshodi or any MVAA office statewide to complete the replacement process.

Muri-Okunola explained that the programme reflects the government’s commitment to balancing enforcement with empathy by promoting voluntary compliance through incentives rather than penalties.

Beyond aesthetics, he added, readable number plates are critical to reducing traffic violations, supporting investigations, and improving the efficiency of Lagos State’s digital vehicle tracking and security systems.

“This is not just a regulatory exercise; it is a public safety initiative,” he said, assuring motorists of smooth service delivery throughout the rebate period. He also warned against the use of unauthorised agents, stressing that replacements must only be done at government-approved centres.

The Permanent Secretary reaffirmed the state government’s dedication to people-focused policies that promote safety, accountability, and convenience, urging residents to cooperate in building a safer and more orderly transport system.
